CLC joins Community Solidarity March

Canadian Labour Congress Secretary Treasurer Hassan Yussuff will be marching in solidarity with thousands of people from across the country and from communities in and around Calgary today as part of the Community Solidarity March.

The Community Solidarity March is scheduled to start at 1:00 pm from the Eau Claire Market and make its way over the course of two hours toward Olympic Park. Canadian Labour Congress marchers will be carrying banners that read ?Don?t Trade My Rights? and ?Imagine a World.?

?Working people across the country want the G8 leaders to know that the prosperity they seek is simply not possible unless their rights and the rights of working people around the world are respected. Human Rights, labour rights and environmental protection cannot be written off as extraneous costs of production, barriers to trade, or deterrents to investment. They are fundamental and we want them upheld,? says Yussuff.

The Canadian Labour Congress will have representatives in Calgary next week to take part in and support various anti-globalization activities and educational workshops organized to protest the G8 Meeting taking place in Kananaskis June 26 and 27.

On Monday, Yussuff will moderate a Labour Forum at the G6B People?s Summit, taking place at the University of Calgary from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm (location TBA). The theme of the Forum is ?Corporate Rights vs Social Responsibility" and includes speakers from Canada, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The Canadian Labour Congress and many of its affiliates will be in Calgary throughout the week of the G8 Summit in support of the work and the activities organized by the Calgary and District Labour Council and the Alberta Federation of Labour in cooperation with community partners. Workshops have been organized on June 25, 26 and 27 at the Bridgeland-Riverside Community Centre (919 McDougall Rd. NE) on globalization, international development, and sweatshops.

The Canadian Labour Congress, the national voice of the labour movement, represents 2.5 million Canadian workers. The CLC brings together the majority of Canada?s national and international unions along with the provincial and territorial federations of labour and 137 district labour councils.
